LOCAL INFORMATION
-
World Heritage Site
-
Ruabon Works is close to a proposed World Heritage Site which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2005: Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. This 'waterway in the sky' is a masterpiece of engineering, designed by Thomas Telford. It carries the Llangollen Canal high above the River Dee and is one of the area's most popular tourist attractions.
-
The Aqueduct was, in fact,
originally built to provide industry operating on
the Ruabon Works site with efficient transport
links! The route of the canal into the core of the
site can still be traced, although it has long since
been removed.
-
The forge used in the construction of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is believed to have been based at the Ruabon Works site.
-
River Dee
-
The River Dee has been a vital source of water for the Ruabon Works site since industry first started here, and continues to be so. The Dee has retained its natural beauty and today it has a class 1A rating for the purity of its water, making it one of the cleanest rivers in the world. It is fed by four headland reservoirs and the control of its levels provides a steady flow of water.
-
The River Dee is popular with fishermen. It is well stocked with salmon and trout and is also one of the best rivers in Europe for grayling.
-
Llangollen

There are plans to build an Olympic standard artificial ski centre here and a new four-star hotel.
-
